Today is March 21st, the day when Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Germany, 1685.

Handel, the mother of music, was born in February 23rd, in the same year and the same country, but they have never met each other.

Also, they both lost sight due to the cataract operation from John Taylor, an ophthalmologist from England.

If the press was advanced like today, Handel, who got the operation latter, would have chosen a different doctor¡¦

The Bach family was a remarkable musician family that produced over 50 musicians in 200 years.

Christian Bach, the youngest son of the Bach family, also taught Mozart to compose symphonies.

That is why it is necessary to put the first name when talking about Bach to avoid confusion; Bach in this writing is Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach had about 20 children from his two wives and he composed mostly to support the family. Especially he performed the role of arranging and performing the Vivaldi music (especially known for The Four Seasons) and making them well-known.

One hundred years later, Mendelssohn shed new light on Bach who was forgotten, and after 150 years, the father of music was born again when Casals put together The Suite for Solo Cello (Popular among people playing cello and also for the cell phone ringtones) which was almost abandoned like waste papers and made it well-known to the world.

In other words, Vivaldi and Handel earned much more reputation during the Baroque period when Bach was alive, and almost no one remembered him when Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven bloomed in the Classical period. Bach emerged as a critical repertoire during the Romantic period with Liszt, Chopin, and Schumann due to Mendelssohn.

There had been practically no composer after Mendelssohn who did not study Bach.

Today Bach- it is not true to say his music represents the Baroque music, and he certainly was not the most well-known musician in that period- but he is revered as the greatest father of music representing the Baroque period.

As Bach played the role of introducing the Vivaldi music to the world, so was Bach became well-known by Mendelssohn.

The creator in the Art world is divided into two types, the pioneer type who develops the new realms in form and grammar, and who emulate and apply the existing forms and display creative powers. While Haydn and Beethoven, the two great musicians in the Classical period of the 18th century belong to the formal type, Mozart is a typical latter type, and Bach and Mendelssohn also reinterpreted the existing forms to their own styles and left us as heritage.

The Harvard hospitals located in Boston including HGH(1811), BWH, BIDMC(1896), Dana-Faber, Joslin diabetes Center(1898) seem to be like Haydn and Beethoven, who take the leading roles in developing medical treatments.Anesthesia is administered for the first time(1846), The first implantable Cardiac pacemaker was developed(1960), IVF(1986), Mallory-Weiss syndrome(1939), Kidney dialysis(1946), Kidney transplantation(1954) and Lver transplantation(1983), DC cardioversion(1949) all started from these Harvard hospitals.

Doctor Cushing from Cushing¡¯s disease is the neurosurgeon in this hospital, and the Nobel Prize winners sum up to about ten people. In the Joslin Diabetes Center, the first administrationof insulin in New England(1922)

Dr. Lexie Grey from the popular ABC soap opera Grey¡¯s Anatomy is from the Harvard Medical School, and the MGH Hospital has confidence as being the world¡¯s best in that they have more than ten thousand employees and is supported with one hundred million dollars a year with AIDS research only. The hospital is also the pioneer in the software with being the first in adopting computers into the healthcare system and enforcing the electric charts and OCS.

Today, various doctors from around the world pour into Boston. The doctors succeed by themselves as pioneers, but they also apply the system and up-to-date knowledge and put them in their hospitals in creative ways, just as Bach stretched out his music world by applying the music of Vivaldi and shedding new light on him, and Mendelssohn on Bach.

March¡¦ Chopin, the greatest composer of piano was born in March 1st (1810), Haydn, the father of symphony was born in March 31st (1732), and Beethoven, the great master of music, died of varix bleeding caused from hepatocirrhosis.

Also, March 17th was the 29th anniversary of the opening of Haenam General Hospital where I works in.

I am thinking about writing about them in Boston and Musician (2).
