12_¹ö¶óÀ̾îƼ_Áý.jpg It seems that the heat for South Korean music has never been hotter before.

It has been proven by the interest toward K-Pop in Paris, and by the TV program ¡®I am singer¡¯- with talented musicians showing the audience with the outstanding singing ability, with the beauty of arranging old songs, dance, performance, and with visuals- has widened the chance for the general public to experience more music. There have been criticisms toward the program for putting too much emphasis in the hierarchy of music or in ¡®watching instead of enjoying music¡¯, but the program also receives favorable comments for showing ¡®the true colors of the singers.¡¯

Wagner is no doubt the pioneer of this kind of variety in classical music.

Wagner and Brahms were the two outstanding musicians who appeared in 1830s when the European musical world could not produce any well-known stars after the deaths of Beethoven and Schubert. While Wagner was a ¡®reformed¡¯ composer, Brahms was a ¡®conservative¡¯ following the former generation of the composers including Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. They formed the two prominent musicians in the Romantic music world of the late 19th century.

Brahms had argued that the music itself (the singing ability) completes the independent art. However, Wagner saw music as one part of the composite art and concentrated on composing the opera (real variety), adding the dance and drama into music. ¡®Die Meistersinger von N rnberg¡¯, opera by Wagner, had introduced what was not thought by others at the time, public assessment, while dealing with singing competition (similar to ¡®I am singer¡¯). It meant that the assessment by the music experts should not be all that matters in determining the ranking of the singers. Rather, he emphasized the importance of the reactions by the public, those who listen and enjoy the music personally. It is to say that the opera ¡®Die Meistersinger von N rnberg¡¯ was the beginning of the music program of depending on the audience to determine the ranking of the singers.

Ballet music can be seen in a similar logic. Ballet music has covered the boredom of classical music with beautiful choreography, with Tchaikovsky (refer to Boston and Musician_8) as no doubt the representative. In fact, he has become the representative of ballet music just by introducing three pieces of music, including ¡®the Swan Lake¡¯, ¡®the Sleeping Beauty¡¯, and ¡®the Nutcracker Suite.¡¯ Tchaikovsky is one of the representative musicians loved by the Koreans, and he has chosen us this time, which was like returning our favor.

Do you need further explanations?

The 14th Tchaikovsky competition, the world leading competition held in every four years, was held in Russia from May 15th to 30th. Amazingly, the ¡®Korean classic kids¡¯ produced the most winners, beating out the Russian rivals. Not only Moscow, but the whole world was surprised by ¡®the classical Neoanthropinae¡¯, following Myunghun Jeong, Youngju Jang, and Hanna Jang.

Tchaikovsky had been influenced by the French composer Adolphe Adam, the composer of the piece ¡®Giselle¡¯. Yuna Kim, the leading figure skater in Korea, has chosen ¡®Giselle¡¯ as the music for the short program at the ¡®2011 World Figure Skating Championships¡¯. It has received favorable comments for making such an attempt, for the competition was held in Russia, the country of ballet. It had lesser public impact compared to ¡®Dande Macabre¡¯ or ¡®007¡¯, but it would have felt different if you had learned about the story of ballet ¡®Giselle¡¯. Anyway, I will look forward to seeing Yuna Kim maintaining the optimal capability until the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia and to receive the second Olympic medal.

¡®BalleriNO¡¯, a sketch in the popular TV show ¡®Gag Concert¡¯ in Korea, begins with ¡°It is a great pleasure for our Russian Ballet, which has the history of 250 years, to be in ¡®Boston and Musician 12¡¯ by Taeyoung Yang¡¦¡± It is true that ballet had started in Italy, but 250 years ago, Russia had taken the initiative in ballet as the Bolshoi Ballet performs the piece by Tchaikovsky in 1780.

It is general to call the female ballet dancers ¡®ballerina¡¯ and the male dancers ¡®ballerino¡¯. However, the first dancers are called ¡®ballerina¡¯ and ¡®ballerino¡¯, and those who major in ballet should be called ¡®ballet dancers¡¯. In other words, the first dancers should be called ¡®prima ballerina¡¯, which is, so to speak, like ¡®prima donna¡¯ in opera.

One thing I did every Sunday morning in Boston (Sunday night in Korean time) was to download the TV program ¡®Gag Concert¡¯ that just aired in Korea. It took 6-7 hours to download the one-hour amount of ¡®Gag concert¡¯ because most internets in America are by the modem using the telephone wires not by fiber optic cable as in Korea. However, it was enough for my family to watch and enjoy the show on Sunday nights in Boston time. Congratulations ¡®Gag Concert¡¯, for filming the 600th episode on the 3rd of July.12-¹ö¶óÀ̾îƼ_½ÅÀå123ÆíÁý.jpg

On June 15, the 8th anniversary of the opening of the artificial kidney center in Haenam General Hospital was held in the style of real variety with ¡®Dino¡¯, the representative rock band of the Honam area. On May 26, I gave a lecture about ¡®the death causes of classical music family¡¯ in ¡®Kwangju and Jeonnam internal medicine symposium¡¯. For the upcoming 9th of July, I have invited the families of Professor Chanduk Kim from Gyeongbuk University, Professor Sunmi Kim from Korea University, and Jaehong Park, the deputy head of department of LG, to Haenam. They are my friends who have studied together in Boston. Also, I have arranged the traditional houses (where barbeque parties could be held) in front of Daeheungsa, Haenam, as their accommodations, to bring back memories of the barbeque parties in the weekends in Boston.

See you again in Boston and Musician 13.
