I would say HeoGak who finally won the competition in superstar K (similar to American Idol) was the biggest sensation in Korean pop culture in 2010, not girl's generation or 2pm. the whole nation, sick and tired of 'well planned stars' or 'idol dance group' from the major entertainment company was mesmerized by the "hope" delivered from HeoGak's glorious triumph.
Another big sensation, I would say, was Kolleen park who conducted the choir in a tv program provided by KBS "the qualification of men" The small miracle that Kolleen park and her inexperienced amateur choir has made in the tv show, is now unstoppable making a "teacher-Kolleen syndrome" even after the show is long over.
Director park, began her career when there was no place for "music director" in the field of musical in korea. Her leadership and erudite understanding of culture is still being expressed in korean version of as she took the job as a music director, selected by producer Myung Sung Park (the ceo of Seensee company) who is famous for producing korean version of and
In Musical and Opera, music is not a separate element but a indispensible tool to shape the efficiency of storytelling. It starts from the pioneer of opera, Claudio Monteverdi, Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi, however, were the musicians who popularized the Opera. Opera and a play shares a similarity in that both of them are comprised of dialogues in a story. The distinctive element that separates opera from a play is music. In Opera, all the conversations are spoken as a song: the main character in the performance singing the monologue is called Arias and the dialogues are called recitativo.
"Aida" the famouse and well-loved musical is still performed in SungNam Art hall. It originates from an Opera and it is a work of Giossepe Verdi, who popularized the opera as I have introduced earlier.
With the combination of Pop star Elton john and legendary writer of song lyrics, Tim Rice, the musical Aida enters South Korea in 2005 after making a sensation in broadway from the year 2000. In 2005, the musical gets attention from the media by casting Ok Ju Hyun from FinK.L and in 2010 the main issue of the musical Aida is Colleen park who directed the music of the musical. Many genres including soul, well polished R&B, Rock, Gospel and Ballad are combined in the new version of adding a modern flavor on a classical atmosphere. This work has made me learn what leadership is through this exotic woman named Collen park
Never can I talk of Musical without mentioning 'the face of musical in korea' Nam Kyung Ju and Choi jung Won who are now playing the role Donna and Sam in Mammamia. Mammamia is a second to none jukebox musical comprised of old pop songs of ABBA.
I recall last year 5th of December, a late night after performance in Kwang Joo, I had the honor to meet and drink wine together with the two musical actresses with the help of producer Park Myung Sung and chairman Kim Sam Nam. I could feel the vibe continued from when they were on the stage just by having small talk sitting in the same table.
Before musical was as famous as it is now, when there was no recognized institution to nurture musical actors, the maneuver of few musical actors/actresses like Yun Suk Hwa and producer Park Myung Sung who imported original musical under licence contract has fortified the foundation musical in korea. After the basis was strengthened Nam Kyung Ju and Choi Jung won played the main role to make musical more popular in Korea.
While I was back Harvard, I often went to sit in a medical lectures in medical school. I was amazed by how a class is like a musical. A class where 3-4 professors having conversation was impressive enough, moreover, patients were invited to classes to convey personal experiences on diseases. There were even coordinators and other workers who helped controlling microphones, projectors. 10 or more staff worked together to deliver a lecture including professors and post graduate students. In few cases the patients invited to classes are voluntary, in most cases, however, they are paid to participat in classes and show their medical records themselves. Most of the patients keep their medical records, and they are aware of what medications they are on.
I'm going to wrap it up with a true story.
People who have been to Boston can easily feel how hard it is to go to harvard.
It is common to wander hours to find a way in, to give up after looking for a front gate, or to wonder if the gate they finally have found asking police officers nearby is a real gate to harvard. I recall my second day in Boston, on a day to hand in my HIO document, I roamed around looking for the front gate of Harvard university.
I was expecting a big gate where people can easily find like it is in Korea. Later I found out that the buildings of harvard university is scattered according to the departments, there is no noticeable front gate
